Project: Rural Exclusion

The Transport Training Trust project to provide new career and training opportunities to unemployed residents of Dumfries and Galloway has brought new economic prosperity to 104 participants.

The project was a partnership operated by Transport Training Trust involving Transport Training Trust, Jobcentre plus, Dumfries and Galloway Council and Scottish Enterprise Dumfries and Galloway.

The success of the project has led to a second phase which will operate from October 2005 and focus on those residents mainly in the West of the region.

The project’s success can be measured by the statistical outputs;

180 advisory sessions
104 people trained in new skills
100 of those into work
224 employers contacted
104 new careers developed

The support offered by the project ultimately delivered X different training programmes –

— Cat C Driver Training
— Category c
— Lift Truck Operation
— ADR
— Risk Assessment Training
— Health and Safety
— Slinging and Rigging
— HiAb
— Trainer Training
— SVQ’s

Project staff feel the support of the Jobcentre plus personal advisers was critical in maintaining the initial momentum of the early success of the project by managing the flow of applicants in a manner that maximised success through a controlled schedule for training and job recruitment.

The project management acknowledges the support of all partners but particularly that of SEDAG in facilitating the marketing of projects to employers.
