Project: Operator Development Programme

The recent growth in the Scottish Road Haulage Industry has resulted in a correspondingly large growth at the ‘small operator’ end of the market. This sector, by its nature, is the most precarious, a fact recognised by the project partners who have developed this programme of support for those newly formed, small businesses to increase their likelihood of business security and development.

Operators less than three years old, or those thinking of establishing their own haulage business, can access a wide range of professional business and technical advice and assistance at a time and to a pattern that meets their business schedule. Transport Training Trust in partnership with Scottish Enterprises Business Gateway, have developed a service of specialist resources into a package to be delivered locally and it covers all areas of business management and all areas of technical freight skills that will take their business into new added value areas of operation.
We gratefully appreciate support from our partners Skills for Logistics, Awards UK, Road Haulage Association and several training providers.

One key aspect of the project is that, as many of these businesses rely on a wife or partner to provide support, they too may be included in the training offered eg in the use of IT, sales and telephone techniques. Another is the availability of specialist support after the training period is over to provide ad-hoc, but very necessary aftercare to assist confidence in taking a new directive.
