The Transport Training Trust
The Transport Training Trust is a charity registered in Scotland. It has been established to promote Life Long Learning in the industry and to seek funding from various governmental and EU bodies.
The
charity was conceived after discussions between various Logistics companies,
training organisations and trade bodies who were concerned that not
enough time and money were being spent on updating the skills of the
workforce.
Their concerns were heightened by the shortage of Large Goods Vehicle drivers which is currently in the region of 40,000 in the UK, a figure which is likely to increase dramatically when the Road Transport Directive comes into effect in March 2005.
The current age profile of LGV drivers in the UK is that 60% are over 45 years old and statistics have shown that there are not enough new entrants coming into the industry to replace those who are set to retire. The need to attract more people into the industry is apparent and once they have been employed it is important that they are trained to a high standard.
The
government has already set about solving the shortage with the introduction
of the Young Drivers Scheme for 18 to 21 year olds and the Scottish Driver
Training Scheme for over 21’s. The establishment of the Skills for
Logistics council will further enhance the opportunities for training within
the industry with the introduction of National Vocational Qualifications
to cover a wide range of subjects relevant to the industry.
The aim of The Transport Training Trust is to ensure that those currently in the industry can have their skills updated and that we can also offer the unemployed or career changers the opportunity to enter into what is one of the largest business sectors in the UK.
